 VULCANO DI FOGO

The island of Fogo represents a great single volcano, that comes from 4.000 m of depth and it almost reaches 3.000 m of altitude. The island is separated naturally, from point of view of space, in:
a) area out of the crater (Bordeira) and
b) area inside of crater, that is, the interior part of the crater (Caldera).

The Natural Park of Fogo corresponds the high area of the Island of Fogo, altitudes above 1.500 m above sea level including the slope external and internal of the volcanic crater, the internal plateau (Chã) and the volcanic cone.

This Natural Park has as point of reference Monte Cruz at 1.800 meters, in the southern end of Bordeira, it follows this quota outlining the exterior West of Bordeira to the North limit of Chã on the entrance of Monte Velha on the site of Fernão Gomes' ranch. Starting from this last reference it goes down Fernão Gomes' valley to a quota of 1.500 meters, next it follows this quota in the South directing for the slope East of the island including Monte Calçada and a field of lava of Gancho continuing the boards of this current that links to the entrance of the Chã in the base of Monte Cruz.

The caldera, in an altitude of 1.700 m is limited to the South, West and North by a steep wall about 1.000 m of altitude (Bordeira) and it is opened on the East, where one finds Pico de Fogo at almost 1.300 m tall.

At the end of the XVIII century the precocious volcanic activity was finished, characterized by frequent eruptions of the main crater of the Pico de Fogo, starting to attend to rare eruptions, coming of the deepest areas, in other words, of the soil of the caldera. The last eruption of the crater of the Pico de Fogo took place in 1785 (RIBEIRO 1960). In the XX century two eruptions took place, on June 12th, 1951 and on April 2nd, 1995, both starting from secondary craters in the base of the volcano.
