 MUSIC AND TRADITION

Besides the parties in June, Chã das Caldeiras is known for their cultural wealth with the traditional music being the one upmost prefered. "Talaia-baxu" is the typical rhythm of the island and you will find it on the artist Djonsinho Montrond of Chã das Caldeiras, his maximum exponent. Eminent performer of the instruments of strings, above all violin, this artist is known in all over the island and he is a charm for all the tourists that visits the the crater.

A Local Musician : Nhô Djonsinho Montrond

Original of a family of musicians, Nhô Djonsinho Montrond is self-taught, and he has been transmitting the knowledge he gained in the area of the music to the new generation. He learned how to play the violin in the forties when he was 10 years old, then he was already animating marriage dances, baptize events and other traditional parties of the island, where "talaia-baxu" and "mazurca" were the genres more appreciated to dance.

Many of the artists' of Chã das Caldeiras consists of several names of the family Montrond as Amaro, Bebeto, Bébé and Betinho. Today, Chã das Caldeiras has a big spring of artists, since, besides Djonsinho and Eduardo, it counts also with Nhô Ramiro, Zé de Sete Filhos and the children of Ramiro, and among others.
